چکیده

We report the detection of a faint old stellar system at (α, δ) = (194.29 • , 34.32 •) (SDSS J1257+3419), based on the spatial distribution of bright red-giant branch stars in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 4. SDSS J1257+3419 has a half-light radius of 38 ± 12 pc and an absolute integrated V-magnitude of M V = −4.8 +1.4 −1.0 mag at a heliocentric distance of 150 ± 15 kpc. A comparison between SDSS J1257+3419 and known Galactic halo objects suggests that SDSS J1257+3419 is either (a) a faint and small dwarf galaxy or (b) a faint and widely extended globular cluster. In the former case, SDSS J1257+3419 could represent an entity of a postulated subhalo of the Milky Way. Further photometric and dynamical study of this stellar system is vital to discriminate these possibilities.

Comments on a faint old stellar system at 150 kpc

Context. Recent study of SDSS J1257+3419 has revealed that this stellar system is either a faint and small dwarf galaxy or a faint and widely extended globular cluster. Aims. In this short note, the author suggests that this system is one of the smallest dwarf spheroidals (dSphs) in the Milky Way. Methods. We re-examine some observational quantities of this object and check whether it can be bo...

The Discovery of an Ultra-faint Star Cluster in the Constellation of Ursa Minor1

We report the discovery of a new ultra-faint globular cluster in the constellation of Ursa Minor, based on stellar photometry from the MegaCam imager at the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope (CFHT). We find that this cluster, Muñoz 1, is located at a distance of 45± 5 kpc and at a projected distance of only 45 from the center of the Ursa Minor dSph galaxy. Using a Maximum Likelihood technique we m...

A Pair of Boötes: A New Milky Way Satellite

As part of preparations for a southern sky search for faint Milky Way dwarf galaxy satellites, we report the discovery of a stellar overdensity in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 5, lying at an angular distance of only 1.5 degrees from the recently discovered Boötes dwarf. The overdensity was detected well above statistical noise by employing a sophisticated data mining algorithm and ...

Discovery of the Largest Known Lensed Images Formed by a Critically Convergent Lensing Cluster

We identify the largest known lensed images of a single spiral galaxy, lying close to the centre of the distant cluster MACS J1149.5+2223 (z = 0.544). These images cover a total area of ≃ 150 2 and are magnified ≃ 200 times. Unusually, there is very little image distortion implying the central mass distribution is almost uniform over a wide area (r ≃ 200 kpc) with a surface density equal to the...

Stellar Disk in the Galaxy Malin

Since its discovery, Malin 1 has been considered the prototype and most extreme example of the class of giant low surface brightness disk galaxies. Examination of an archival Hubble Space Telescope I-band image reveals that Malin 1 contains a normal stellar disk that was not previously recognized, having a central I-band surface brightness of µ 0 = 20.1 mag arcsec −2 and a scale length of 4.8 k...
